DinnerXDesign – A Chat with AldonaB

(Styling & Photography by AldonaB)

When putting a look together for an event such as DinnerXDesign, there’s much room to be creative, to play with colour, texture and pattern, and to really showcase your personal style in a fun and artistic way – just as the event itself.

I had the pleasure of putting together five looks to serve as inspiration for the upcoming event, and I did this with the help of some amazing local boutiques in Kensington; Purr, Splash of Fashion, Brooklyn Clothing Co., and James & Dickson Clothiers, with beautiful hair and makeup by Swizzlesticks SalonSpa.

As a stylist I love supporting local as much as possible, especially when these boutiques are able to provide some really amazing and unique pieces. What I really wanted to showcase for DinnerXDesign is that you can go in a variety of directions, be it dressy, funky or a bit more casual. I did this by incorporating denim, tailored jackets, a bow tie, a variety of colours, statement accessories and of course, the little black dress.

Look One (Model Kiya Naka): The Little Black Dress

No matter what the occasion, the little black dress is the classic that you should always have in your closet, ready to go at a moment’s notice. What I love about this stunning option from Splash of Fashion is that it has amazing detail, an interesting neckline and super flattering shape. I added a great statement necklace and Swizzlesticks completed the look with a sultry and sexy dark lip.

Look Two (Model Michelle Wozniak): Pretty in Pink

I wanted to showcase something cool and funky that you can also wear again and do much with in terms of styling. This cutout dress is form fitting, the grey tone leaves much room for styling play, and can be worn in a variety of different ways. Here I decided to top it off with a pretty pale pink blazer to add a bit of structure, and added fun accessories from Purr to complete the look – the funky geometric clutch bag is also perfect to later wear to your favourite music festival. Michelle’s look is finished off with a stunning and trendy bright coral lip colour.

Look Three (Model Monica Arora Bir): 70s Inspired

The 70s inspired look has been trending for a while, and I’m not over it yet. This mustard dress from Purr is really easy to pull off and get right, and I wanted to add a few accessories to really add to the vibe of the look. A faux fur vest is a bit unexpected, and if that’s not your style, try a leather bomber or vest instead, or leave the dress to speak for itself.

Look Four (Model Andrew Obrecht): Sleek Denim

I love styling menswear and enjoy showcasing to my clients that you can have a lot of fun putting your look together, no matter what the occasion. Here I wanted to showcase that a great pair of jeans can be worn to an arts event – among others – and look both sexy and well put together. These I picked out at Brooklyn Clothing Co., where they have an amazing selection of denim of all styles and washes. I wanted something sleek and dark, and the slim fit option is perfect for Andrew’s tall stature. The wash also makes it easier to incorporate a poplin shirt with a funky bow tie.

Look Five (Model Blaire Delaneyplunkie): Pattern on Pattern

Playing with colour and pattern can be so much fun, and as far as I’m concerned, just put it together and see if it works. It’s all about experimentation! I’m always a fan of the polkadot, and topping it off with a beautifully crafted jacket from James & Dickson Clothiers completed Blaire’s look. A more casual pant was once again used, and I rolled them up to showcase his shoes, as well as to add another playful element to the ensemble.
